The recent assessment by the EU s scientific body, the Joint Research Centre, that nuclear energy does no more harm to human health or the environment than any other power-producing technology considered to be sustainable may be a sign of the green stamp of approval needed for the inclusion of nuclear in the EU Taxonomy on sustainable finance, write Elina Teplinsky, Vincent Zabielski and Victoria Judd, partner, special counsel and counsel, at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP.

The EU Taxonomy Regulation, a system that classifies economic activities as environmentally sustainable to help the EU meet its Green Deal objectives, has emerged as an increasingly complex and politically fraught framework despite what should be a science-based approach to climate change mitigation. ....

Gazprom touts green credentials
Russia s Gazprom estimates that its natural gas supplies to Europe have a significantly smaller carbon footprint than competing LNG shipments, the company said in a presentation on May 18.
Gazprom s gas supplies to Europe via the Nord Stream and TurkStream pipelines have a carbon footprint of only 6.3 and 7.8 grams of CO
2 equivalent/MJ of energy, the company said. The estimates cover the production, treatment and pipeline transport of the gas. ....

Nuclear energy could produce affordable hydrogen for Europe

Nuclear energy could produce affordable hydrogen for Europe
A Foratom position paper has been released which identifies nuclear energy as a perfect solution for the generation of large quantities of low-carbon and affordable hydrogen.
The Brussels-based trade association believes that this could be key as Europe aims to transform all parts of its economy to zero-carbon emissions especially in transportation and industry.
Low-carbon nuclear power and heat can be used for the generation of decarbonised hydrogen via electrolysis with an advantage of making use of all low carbon electricity sources being two-fold.
First if all, it will ensure that there is enough hydrogen available at all times as an increasing number of sectors switch to this energy carrier. Secondly, running an electrolyser for longer periods can reduce the costs of this particular technology. ....

Foratom highlights nuclear's role in EU hydrogen economy : Energy & Environment

Nuclear provides a perfect solution for the generation of large quantities of low-carbon and affordable hydrogen, the European nuclear trade body Foratom said today in a position paper. This, it said, will be key as Europe aims to transform all parts of its economy, including transport and industry. The position paper makes a number of policy recommendations aimed at recognising the contribution nuclear energy can make in decarbonising such areas.
(Image: Foratom)
Foratom says the EU has set itself the very ambitious target of decarbonising its economy by 2050. Achieving this will require a massive transformation of the energy, industry, transport and building sectors, it says. Whilst solutions already exist to decarbonise the power sector by 2050, hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as transport and industry remain a challenge. ....
