The NCJ Home Cooking Recipe Contest, sponsored by Eureka Natural Foods and Delish on 5th, was a potluck of submissions from cheesecake to chili, pancakes to pierogi. And now the results are in. Sponsor Eureka Natural Foods gave in to its sweet tooth, choosing Tiffany Bullman s delicate cream puffs filled with whipped cream and topped with chocolate ganache. As for the Readers Winner, the voters went wild for Laurel North s Wild Foraged Feast of greens and flowers from Humboldt s forests and fields, paired with her nettle and mint tea. She had been waiting for the Eureka Recycling Center to resume paying for California Refund Value bottles and cans after it closed in March due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the eagerly anticipated reopening was short lived. The center briefly resumed its CRV redemption services last September but an overwhelming demand caused traffic congestion and hazards on Broadway, which caused Humboldt Waste Management Authority to discontinue the service, which wasn t penciling out financially anyway. In 2010, Humboldt County had a total of 10 CRV redemption centers but at the beginning of last year only five remained. Now there are none, as centers in Fortuna, McKinleyville and Redway all closed their CRV programs in 2020, which partially led to the flood of demand that prompted the Eu ....

As a road that serves both as a state highway and as a city “Main Street,” it fills neither role satisfactorily. Half of all automobile accidents in Eureka happen on Broadway. This 3-mile stretch of road, which serves 35,000 vehicles daily, has been the site of regular fatal collisions, including three this year. Local residents complain the road is ugly, difficult and dangerous to cross, and gives an unpleasant first impression to visitors coming into Eureka from the south. Motorists complain of long delays at traffic lights, left turns that are difficult and dangerous, and pedestrians dodging traffic as they jaywa ....
