Homelessness in Yreka: Council remains undecided on temporary campsite

The council also discussed a new potential site owned by the city on the corner of East Greenhorn Road and Mill Street. Kegg said the building there is currently being rented for storage space. It would take time for the current tenant to move, so the site is probably not feasible. Eventually, a permanent urban campsite will be established next to the Beacon of Hope s future homeless shelter, which is being built off of Foothill Drive, in the area of the now-abandoned Yreka Western Railroad s Blue Goose Excursion Train site. Kegg said on Friday morning, they hope the permeant location can start being used in October.

2 places being considered as a temporary campsite for Yreka-area homeless

It will likely take months for the permanent site to be ready, said Yreka Mayor Duane Kegg. An environmental review of the property indicated that some dirt will need to be removed before it can be used for a homeless campsite.   Kegg had hoped a decision would be made Thursday night, but the council decided to look at the situation further and bring it back to the council s next special meeting on Thursday, June 17. Kegg said a decision needs to be made as soon as possible – hopefully at the June 17 meeting. He s hurrying the project along because of the increased fire danger that dry fuels are presenting in the area of the current camps.
