Country Legend Charley Pride Dies From Covid At 86
American country music legend Charley Pride has become a victim of the Covid-19 pandemic. Pride is dead at age 86.
RCA Records recording artist Pride was at one time the second biggest selling RCA artist after Elvis Presley. He is also one of only three African-American artists to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
In the 1950s Pride excelled in sport and was a baseball player for the Memphis Red Sox.
In 1958 Charley visited Sun Records in Memphis and diverted his vocation to music. In 1971 he had his biggest hit ‘Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’. ....

One of the great voices in country music history, Charley Pride sang like Shaker furniture, with clean and simple lines, sturdy joints and unadorned expression of the intended design. He was among the least showy in Nashville’s artistic pantheon; he wasn’t a yodeler, nor much of a note-bender, neither a keener nor a growler. Composer Harlan Howard once said that all of country songwriting boils down to “three chords and the truth.” Pride was easy on the chords and generous with the truth.
Complications of COVID-19 ended Pride’s life at the age of 86. Obituaries and appreciations invariably describe him as country music’s first Black star — or some version thereof. “The Jackie Robinson of country music” is especially apt, because before he was a famous singer, Pride was a professional baseball player. An injury to his pitching arm prevented him from making the step from the last days of the Negro Leagues to the newly integrated Major ....
