A wild elephant was found electrocuted after it uprooted an electricity pole at a field near Kothigutta village of Palamaner mandal, abutting Koundinya wildlife sanctuary, 50 km from here, on Friday morning.
Forest officials heaved a sigh of relief after it came to light that 20 other elephants of the herd had escaped unhurt. The fresh casualty is the twelfth in Chittoor district in the last two years.
According to information, the large herd was found moving around close to the fields at the village late on Thursday night by homebound farmers. Around Thursday midnight, a group of villagers rushed to the fields to prevent the herd from damaging the groundnut crops. GUWAHATI: A herd of 18 wild elephants died in Assam, ostensibly after being struck by lightning.
The incident occurred at Kandali Proposed Reserve Forest in Central Assam s Nagaon district on Wednesday night.
Assam s Chief Wildlife Warden MK Yadava said it was most likely that lightning claimed the lives of the jumbos.
There have been incidents of lightning killing animals but this is a huge number, he said.
A team of veterinary doctors and wildlife experts left for Kandali and they are expected to reach the spot by Friday morning. ....

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], February 16 (ANI): Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed concern over the death of elephants in the past two weeks at the Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary in Kalahandi District.
While reviewing the elephant death matter in a meeting through videoconferencing, Patnaik directed the officials of the Department of Forest and Environment and the Department of Animal Husbandry to take joint action to prevent elephant deaths. He also advised officials to take help from the state and national wildlife experts in this regard. ....

Bhawanipatna: At least four female elephants have died within 11 days at Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, official sources said.
The latest jumbo death was reported on Thursday when forest officials found carcasses of a female elephant by the side of Ghusurigudi Nullha, a water body inside the sanctuary. Similarly, one elephant death was reported on February 10, 2021 and February 9, 2021 from the same Ghusurigudi area, the official said. ....

Bhawanipatna, Feb 13: At least four female elephants have died within 11 days at Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha s Kalahandi district, official sources said. The latest jumbo death was reported on Thursday when the forest officials found carcasses of a female elephant by the side of Ghusurigudi Nullha, a water body inside the sanctuary.
Similarly, one elephant death was reported on February 10 and 9 from the same Ghusurigudi area, the official said. According to information, the first such incident came to the light on February 1 after officials found a dead female elephant near Tentulipada village inside the sanctuary. ....
