Madeira to charge impact fees on new development

MADEIRA BEACH â Developers of both commercial and residential properties will soon be paying impact fees to the city based on the size of their projects. The purpose is to help recover some of the costs to the city associated with development.
Fees will be assessed in three areas impacted by new developments and redevelopment of existing properties. There will be mobility fees for roads; health and safety fees for fire, EMS and police services; and fees to benefit parks and quality of life.
Recognizing the fees could have a negative impact on potential developments in the city, at least when first introduced, the commission decided to phase in the charges. The recommendation by Mayor John Hendricks was to charge a lesser amount, 40 percent of the total fee, during the first year after introducing the fee, then increasing it 10 percent each year for the next six years. ....

Madeira looks at regulating 'dangerous' electric bicycles | Beaches

MADEIRA BEACH â Saying they are âall over town,â are âdangerousâ and âneed to be regulated,â Mayor John Hendricks came down hard on electric bicycles and scooters at the city commissionâs Jan. 27 workshop meeting.
Hendricks told of an incident where he nearly ran over a child riding an electric bicycle âwho was coming out of Johnâs Pass Village and pulled right in front of me as I was coming down the bridge.â He also said a woman was run over and killed Jan. 14 on Gulf Boulevard in Madeira Beach.
Hendricks said he would like to see the e-bikes banned in the city. ....

Monday is the last day to make sure a child in need gets a new pair of shoes under the Christmas tree this year.
Madeira Beach Fundamental School is collecting new sneakers for students at nearby Title One schools.
At least 40 percent of kids there come from low-income families.
The campaign started nine years ago, and last year they broke a school record and collected more than 200 pairs of shoes.
