Rockhampton in the running for national Tidy Towns award

Rockhampton Regional Council has been named a finalist in the 2021 Australian Sustainable Communities Tidy Towns awards.
Council welcomed national judge Gail Langley to the region last week and showcased the initiatives that resulted in Rockhampton being crowned Queensland’s most Sustainable Community 2020.
Councillor for Water and Supporting a Better Environment, Donna Kirkland, said after taking out the overall state award in December, being recognised in the national finals was a great honour.
“It is a testament to the local progress and innovation we’ve been working hard to deliver,” Mrs Kirkland said.
“These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to creating a more sustainable future for our region, through the interconnected pathways outlined in our Environmental Sustainability Strategy. ....

Courageous cancer battle inspires footy club support

“It’s been extremely gruelling,” his mother Rachael Hepner said.
The Mt Archer family spent nine months living in Brisbane alongside Mr Hepner as he underwent a heavy course of chemotherapy.
“That was pretty massive,” Mrs Hepner said.
Mr Hepner was then told the cancer had returned with nodules found on his lungs.
He underwent more surgery before doctors discovered late last year the cancer had spread to both his thigh bones.
“He did do two rounds of chemo, lost his hair again and was quite unwell,” Mrs Hepner said.
“In November, he completed two weeks of radiation and then this year recently we found out that it (cancer) has presented itself again.” ....

He took up flying aeroplanes for a hobby in 1976.
I was backpacking through Europe in 1977 and I watched a helicopter spraying grape vines along the Moselle River and I said that s what I wanted to do and that s how it started, he said.
Noosa Surf Club has just run the Shirley Strachan Memorial Swim in honour of the Skyhooks legendary lead singer.
He met Strachan after the late Skyhooks lead singer Strachan moved to Noosa.
Strachan had been flying a Bell 47G helicopter near Mt Archer in August 2001 when air turbulence caused his fatal crash. ....
