After a record-setting performance in the season finale against Butler, Morehead State football senior linebacker Vincent Winey has been named Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week, while teammate BJ Byrd has been tabbed as the league s co-Special Teams Player of the Week.
Winey set Morehead State s single-game tackle record with a career-high 23 stops Saturday. Included in his program record were three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery on a play where Butler looked to be heading for a passing touchdown late in the fourth quarter that could have brought the game to within one score. Twenty-two (22) of his tackles were in the final three quarters.

Trailing 31-3 at new PFL foe Presbyterian Saturday, the Morehead State football team kicked in a different gear. But a second-half rally came up short as the Eagles fell 31-16 to the Blue Hose at Bailey Memorial Stadium in both team s conference opener.
The Eagles got behind 24-3 at the half, but a pair of touchdown connections by junior quarterback Mark Pappas gave the visitors some life. A 50-yard strike to senior transfer receiver BJ Byrd and a 15-yard scoring toss to sophomore slot man Matt Guilfoil, his first career touchdown, accounted for the Eagles second-half points.
