A group of Carlsbad residents has filed a lawsuit against San Diego County in an attempt to overturn the Board of Supervisors’ approval of the McClellan-Palomar Airport Master Plan Update.
At issue is a provision in the update that allows the extension of the airport’s only runway by up to 800 feet.
Opponents of the update said the longer runway would bring more traffic, noise and pollution and that it amounts to an expansion of the airport.
The county and others, including independent consultants hired by the Carlsbad City Council, say the longer runway is not an expansion, because the airport’s boundaries won’t change, and that the extension and other improvements are needed to safely accommodate present and future aircraft at the 1950s-era facility. ....
