Philippine President was campaigner against China's expansive territorial claims

Former Philippine president Benigno Aquino III, a scion of pro-democracy leaders who helped topple dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the 1980s, and a staunch campaigner in his own right against domestic corruption and China’s expansive territorial claims, died on June 24 in a Manila hospital. He was 61.
The cause was renal failure as a result of diabetes, his family said in a statement.

Aquino, who was elected as the south-east Asian country’s 15th president in 2010, largely stayed out of the public eye after leaving office in 2016. (Philippine presidents are limited to a single six-year term.) He had spent the last years of his life in poor health, his family said. ....

The late President Benigno Aquino III criticized the Philippine media on several occasions during his time in Malacañang, when he felt that he was being criticized unfairly. 
His episodes now look harmless in comparison to his successor, President Rodrigo Duterte, who ordered, among others, the shutdown of ABS-CBN and the cancelation of Rappler’s license to do business while banning its reporters from covering Malacañang events. ....

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III was buried Saturday with thousands lining the streets of Manila to remember him for standing up to China in bitter territorial disputes, striking a peace deal with Muslim guerrillas and defending democracy in the Southeast Asian nation where his parents helped topple a dictator.
Aquino died Thursday at age 61 of kidney disease arising from diabetes following a long public absence, after his single six-year term ended in 2016. Family and friends sang a patriotic song after a silver urn with Aquino s remains was placed beside the tomb of his mother, former President Corazon Aquino. Military honors included a 21-gun salute at the private cemetery. ....
