State unlikely to oppose merger split for Lamoille South


Stowe, Morristown and Elmore were forced by the state to merge into one school district two years ago, but that doesn’t mean Stowe residents can’t vote to leave.
At least that’s the opinion of Stowe’s legal counsel, who said the decision is in voters’ hands.
Attorney Nina Atwood — of the firm Stitzel Page & Fletcher — last week wrote in a legal opinion that the Vermont Agency of Education has not taken a formal position on whether towns in forced mergers can vote to leave them. But, she said, the governing bylaws of the Lamoille South district permit any of the three towns to seek a withdrawal after two years of merger. ....

PA middle schooler nets $2,500 for volunteerism


A Morristown sixth grader is one of Vermont’s top two youth volunteers of the year.
Shyla Clayton will receive a $2,500 scholarship for her volunteerism, which involves work at a Morristown thrift store, the local pet adoption center and the halls of her own school, through a nationwide program organized by Prudential Financial.
“We are all really proud of Shyla and her accomplishment,” Peoples Academy Middle School principal Matt Young said. “Shyla’s service to our community is inspiring and provides an important reminder that we can all do more to help our community thrive.”
As one of the 102 top honorees from the 50 states and District of Columbia in the community award program, Shyla will have a chance to be named one of the top 10 youth volunteers for all of America at a national recognition ceremony in April; it will be held virtually. Those top 10 will earn an additional $5,000 scholarship and a $5,000 grant for the charitable organ ....

Black and Hispanic home buyers are more frequently denied mortgages than white buyers even when their financial pictures are similar, according to a realtor.com® analysis of 2019 mortgage data. When they are able to secure mortgages, Black and Hispanic borrowers are more likely to pay higher fees and interest rates on their loans than white and Asian borrowers. ....
