The High Court yesterday upheld a lower court s verdict that convicted and sentenced Haji Md Salim to 10 years in prison in a corruption case filed by the ACC during the military-backed caretaker government in 2007.
It also upheld a fine of Tk 10 lakh imposed on the Awami League lawmaker from Dhaka-7 for amassing wealth worth Tk 14.65 crore beyond known sources of his income.
The HC, however, scrapped another part of the lower court s judgement delivered in 2008 which handed three years imprisonment to Salim for concealing information about his wealth to the Anti-Corruption Commission. ....

The High Court will deliver its verdict on March 9 on the appeal filed by independent lawmaker and Awami League leader Haji Mohammad Salim challenging the trial court verdict that sentenced him to 13 years imprisonment in a corruption case.
The HC bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq today set the date.
During the hearing today, Haji Salim s lawyers Abdul Baset Majumder and Sayed Ahmed Raza told the HC that their client was not involved in any corruption but the case has been filed against him in 2007 to harass him on political motive. ....

The High Court has observed that the Anti-Corruption Commission can issue notice to any citizen asking him or her to appear in person to its office to place statements over corruption allegations.
The HC bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq made the observation in the full text of its order on a writ petition filed by Deputy Attorney General Jannatul Ferdousi Rupa challenging the legality of a notice issued by the ACC requesting her to appear before the commission s office to give her statement on the allegation against her of amassing illegal wealth. ....

The High Court has observed that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) can issue notice to any citizen in question, asking him or her to appear in person to the commission s office to place statements over corruption allegations.
..therefore, ACC acted within the provision of law for issuance of the impugned notice for the interest of justice and for the transparency to pursue any person if there is any allegation of corruption or earning property from any unknown source of income, the HC said.
