Thirty high school students from the Hudson Valley were honored Thursday with induction into New York s fourth class of My Brother s Keeper fellows. My Brother s Keeper is a national initiative started by President Obama that aims to increase opportunities for boys and young men of color. Education leaders in New York have embraced the initiative since 2016, delivering financial support to community-based MBK programs. To the young men that are present, please understand that New York State MBK was created for you, said Board of Regents Chancellor Lester Young to hundreds of students across the state at a virtual symposium Thursday. That suggests that you are special. That you are somebody. No matter what anyone says, always remember: you are special, and you are something. ....
The Mid-Prairie boys and girls soccer teams travel to Monticello tonight for dates on the pitch with the Panthers. The Mid-Prairie boys are 1-0 on the season after a 3-0 shut out win over Mediapolis Tuesday in which Zeus Fugate scored twice and Owen Trimpe once in the victory while Keaton Graber turned in a clean sheet in goal with four saves. This is the season opener for the Monticello boys. The Panthers were 5-10 in 2019. They do not have a player on the roster who has scored a varsity goal but do return keeper Alex Fagan for his senior year. As a sophomore he played 980 minutes, making 172 saves, working out to an 83.5% save percentage. Mid-Prairie is 7-0 all-time against Monticello, including a 4-3 win over the Panthers in 2019. ....

Monticello High says it learned Tuesday a student tested positive for the virus. Eight other students and five staff were identified as having close contact with the infected student. Stone Robinson Elementary says it also learned Tuesday a staff member tested positive. Four students have been identified as close contacts. Everyone affected at both schools is quarantining. ....

After weather derailed the schedule during the first half of this week, the Mid-Prairie boys basketball team is on the road tonight to take on the Monticello Panthers. The Hawks come into the game with an overall record of 8-4, they are 8-3 in the River Valley Conference. Last time out they were beaten Friday at Camanche 66-51, despite 14 points from Carter Harmsen and 13 from Aidan Rath. On the season, Harmsen leads the Hawks at 20 points and seven rebounds per game. Jack Pennington has a team best five assists and two steals per night. Monticello is a perfect 12-0 overall, 11-0 in RVC play. The Panthers are ranked No. 3 in this week’s class 3A poll from the Iowa Associated Press. Last time out they beat North Cedar 66-41 with Justin Recker scoring 22 and Connor and Luke Lambert at 12 each. For the year the Panthers are led by Recker at 17 points and seven rebounds per game.
