A former Mona Shores teacher was sentenced Wednesday in the Muskegon County District Court for the sexual assault of a minor in 2017. Erik Childers, 30, was sentenced to one year in the Muskegon County Jail, followed by two years probation on the charges of third degree criminal sexual conduct. The assault, reportedly took place in early 2017, before Childers was an employee at Mona Shores Schools. He was placed on administrative leave and eventually terminated following the accusations. ....

Erik Childers, 30, pleaded no contest Jan. 19 to one felony charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person ages 13 to 15 and one felony charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Childers was sentenced Wednesday, April 14, by Muskegon County Circuit Judge Annette Smedley to one year in jail and two years of probation. He could have been sentenced to a longer term in prison, but the victim requested leniency, which she wanted to respect, Smedley said. ....
