Jusuf Nurkic felt nervous Friday night before the Portland Trail Blazers took the court at the Moda Center for what turned out to be an all-important win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
That night marked the first time Nurkic played in front of fans at the Moda Center since March 2019, when he broke his leg during a home game. ....

The Lakers are the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference, which puts them in position for a play-in game with the No. 10 seed.
The Trail Blazers now own the tiebreaker with the Lakers, meaning that if they both end the regular season with same records, Portland would go into the playoffs as the higher seed.
The Lakers don’t own the tiebreaker with the Dallas Mavericks either and the Mavericks currently have a two-game cushion on the No. 7 seed. ....

They chanted “MVP” while Damian Lillard shot free throws. They booed foul calls that went against the Portland Trail Blazers. They stood and cheered for big plays. And, of course, they chanted “Beat L.A.”
Fans were back inside the Moda Center on Friday night for the first time since March 2020. Only about 1,900 were allowed because of the ongoing pandemic. But even with the arena at 10% capacity, those fortunate enough to get a ticket made their presence felt during a 106-101 Blazers victory. ....

It felt like one big collective sigh. All of Portlandâs pent up pandemic energy and dread and fear just washing over into waves and cheers and applause. Before the Trail Blazers took to the court for their first home game with fans at the Moda Center since March 2020, there had been a spattering of applause. The 10 percent capacity crowdâjust under 2,000âmade themselves known with bits of nervous fandom here and there: a quick wave of a Rip City flag, a distant âBeat LAâ chant, echoed yips and yays.
