State to bring pheasant program to prison


The state of Montana is trading Holsteins for hens at Montana State Prison, hopeful that a new pheasant rearing and release program will help recruit hunters and provide inmates continued work opportunities.
House Bill 637, a wide-ranging and hotly debated bill brought by Joliet Republican Rep. Seth Berglee, includes $1 million in funding for a new pheasant program at the Montana State Prison. Plans call for the birds to be released on state wildlife management areas ahead of youth hunting seasons — the first time in nearly four decades the state will be raising and stocking pheasants.
Recruitment, retention and reactivation, commonly called the “Three Rs” of hunting, is part of a national push to bolster hunter numbers. Recognizing that hunting is not only about shooting a bird, FWP sees the pheasant releases as an opportunity for early success, especially as young people try hunting, said Quentin Kujala, FWP’s chief of staff. ....

MOIESE — This Mother’s Day weekend marked the traditional re-opening of Red Sleep Mountain Drive, where folks can observe the majestic bison that live on the Flathead Reservation in Western Montana.
But this year in particular marks a monumental new chapter for the Bison Range.
Friday morning, to commemorate the opening weekend, members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes gathered for a small ceremony. The Flathead Nation flag was raised in front of the visitor’s center, and traditional prayer, song, and drumming by the group Yamncut Drum ushered in the occasion. A Buffalo Calling Song was sung in celebration, and Séliš-Ql̓ispé Culture Committee Director Tony Incashola explained to MTN News the significance of the song. ....

Steve Bullock announced $350,000 in funding to support the growth of 34 Native American-owned small businesses in each of the eight Tribal Nations in Montana through the Indian Equity Fund Small Business Grant program at the Montana Department of Commerce, including some local businesses.

34 Native American businesses in Montana to receive distributed $350K grant


HELENA - Thirty-four Native American-owned small businesses in each of the eight Tribal Nations in Montana are receiving a $350,000 grant Monday to support expansion.
The grant is made possible by the Indian Equity Fund Small Business Grant program at the Montana Department of Commerce.
“Investing in Native American-owned small businesses means investing in opportunities to create jobs and strengthen local and tribal economies across Montana,” Governor Steve Bullock said in a release from the Office of the Governor. “The Indian Equity Fund Small Business Grant is one of the best tools the state has available to directly support entrepreneurs and small business owners in Indian Country.” ....
