Newsom orders ban on new oil fracking by 2024

But Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot said the riskiest process related to fracking is the drilling of new wells, and that will stop in 2024. Existing permits for wells must be used within one year, he said.
“Those wells that have been fracked presumably will continue to produce oil in coming years. But the impact or the activities that we’re concerned about, which is essentially the violent explosion of chemicals through the subsurface, will end,” he said. “Period. Full stop.”  
Fracking a well “involves actually one specific time limited event. Think about this as essentially shooting down a cocktail of chemicals and sand and water and sometimes acid underground, in a fairly violent way that fractures the subsurface,” he said. ....

Commentary: Has California given up its climate ambitions?

The era of California’s big climate ambitions is over, even as California’s megadroughts and wildfires worsen.
California’s biggest climate bill of 2021 is already dead, having failed to survive its first hearing in a Senate committee. Senate Bill 467 would have done three things:
established 2,500-foot setbacks between oil wells and people’s homes
ensured a managed decline of California’s oil industry
and created a just transition fund for workers displaced by that decline. 
The first is fairly mild  Texas already has setbacks, California does not  but the oil and building trades union alliance freaked out about a setback stand-alone bill last year. The second was the big enchilada, and on that hill, the bill died. Never mind the promise of a just transition for workers. ....

Santa Barbara Medicare-for-All Activists Host Rallies Today

Local activists, today, Saturday, April 17, are hosting a series of rallies in downtown Santa Barbara, urging state legislators to pass AB 1400, the California Guaranteed Health Care for All (CalCare), a statewide equivalent to federal bills calling for Medicare for All.
Participants will practice physical distancing, wear masks, and observe other Covid safety guidelines. Walking between rallies will be on sidewalks and the State Street mall
Participants will meet at 1 p.m. at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse on the Anacapa Street side to share and make signs. After a short rally at about 1:35 pm, marchers will walk two blocks west on Anapamu Street to the offices of Assemblymember Steve Bennett, 101 W. Anapamu St. ....
