MPS school board to vote on budget, use of federal stimulus aid money

Facing the task of helping more than 70,000 students recover from the pandemic as state lawmakers are poised to hold education funding flat, Milwaukee School Board members are scheduled to vote Thursday on a tight annual budget and historic temporary infusion of federal stimulus dollars.
Amending the plans already put forward by administrators, board members have called for several new programs, including more trades courses and a major expansion to the district’s Black and Latino Male Achievement program to offer mentorship and other support for female and LGBTQIA+ students of color.
Students and community leaders have asked for some additional changes. At a rally Wednesday night, students with Leaders Igniting Transformation called for more mental health services and less spending on security. Though the district previously cut contracts with police, the district still employs 274 safety assistants.  ....

Activists on Wednesday called on Pittsburgh officials to cancel a bid seeking supplies of “less-lethal” weapons like the ones deployed against protesters in Pittsburgh and other cities during civil unrest.
“These munitions are turned on people fighting for the rights of Black and brown community members,” said Joshua Friedman, of Bend the Arc Pittsburgh, which co-hosted the Downtown Pittsburgh event with the Alliance for Police Accountability. Also present were several protesters who say they were caught up in clouds of tear gas, smoke and other munitions during the summer’s protests. ....

PA nurses fight for patient limits to ensure quality care

As more and more nurses are facing burnout and difficulty in providing proper care as they are overwhelmed with far too many patients, workers, unions, legislators, allies and others have called on health systems to ensure that staffing ratios are a guarantee for the nursing community in the commonwealth. ....
