BoE: UK economy to grow 7.25% in 2021 as Covid curbs ease

The Bank of England held interest rates at record lows and kept the size of its stimulus programme unchanged on Thursday as the lender said the UK economy is set to enjoy its strongest peacetime growth as Covid-19 restrictions ease.
The economy is expected to expand 7.25 per cent this year, the central bank said, returning to its pre-pandemic size by the fourth quarter of this year, with government support for workers and businesses helping to limit job losses.

The positive outlook came as the BoE kept the size of its stimulus programme unchanged at £895 billion ($1.24 trillion) while the monetary policy committee also voted unanimously to hold the benchmark lending rate at a record low of 0.1 per cent. Tim Henman fears masks are damaging for children

Former tennis star Tim Henman is sceptical of a reliance on face masks and lockdowns to fight coronavirus and is worried about the damage caused to children by restrictions on sports and social activities.
The one-time Wimbledon favourite, who runs the Tim Henman Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of vulnerable children, questions the use of masks and lockdowns because of the limits they impose on participation in sports for fun.
He first publicly questioned the UK government’s policies last month when he was a signatory on a letter demanding the publication of evidence to support wearing masks in classrooms. ....

Covid pushes UK government borrowing to highest level since Second World War

Britain’s borrowing hit £303.1 billion ($420.14bn) in March, after emergency pandemic support measures sent the annual figure to the highest level since the end of the Second World War.
The surge in public sector debt over the financial year, which ended last month, was £246bn higher than in the previous 12 months, with borrowing at 14.5 per cent of economic output, the highest ratio since 1946 when the figure was 15.2 per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics.
