AFTER almost three months in detention, two teachers, three adult Lumad students and two Lumad elders were set free on Friday, May 14, 2021.
The Davao del Norte Provincial Prosecutor issued a release order as it dismissed the complaints for kidnapping and serious illegal detention, human trafficking and child abuse for lack of evidence and lack of probable cause.
Even if evidence was found against them, the prosecutors said the cases fall outside the jurisdiction of their office as the alleged crimes happened in Cebu City. ....

3 cops accused of rape to file countercharges

THREE policemen in San Fernando were relieved of their duties and their firearms were recalled after a woman accused them of raping her inside the police station.
The three policemen, however, are set to file countercharges against the woman and her mother.
Police Col. Engelbert Soriano, Cebu Police Provincial Office officer-in-charge, said Monday, May 10, 2021, they have evidence to prove that the three policemen were not in the station at the time that the alleged rape happened because they were instructed to respond to an incident.
Investigation also showed that it was not the first time that the woman lodged such a complaint. She had also accused other policemen from other police stations of rape, Soriano added. ....

Cebu City retracts legal aid offer to Nepomuceno

THE Cebu City Government has withdrawn its promise to provide legal assistance to the family of Ritchie Nepomuceno, the woman who was gunned down weeks after accusing 11 policemen of rape and extortion.
Cebu City Legal Officer Rey Gealon said Friday, April 23, 2021, that they decided to retract after learning that the killing of Nepomuceno may have been related to illegal drugs.
“The mayor was under the impression that Nepomuceno was a victim of random killing. But police investigation showed that it may have been related to illegal drugs,” Gealon said.
