Midlands Gives collects over $3 million, sets new fundraising record

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– On Wednesday afternoon, officials with Midlands Gives announced the total amount raised during this year’s fundraiser. Midlands Gives says they raised $3,343,033 in donations through 21,080 gifts. Authorities say this is a new fundraising record.
“The generosity of our community is inspiring! We are incredibly thankful for the thousands of everyday philanthropists that came together to support our supporters,” says JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation. “Our region showcased immense resiliency and pride during Midlands Gives Day, despite the pandemic’s continued presence and devastating impact. Chancellor Finalists to Visit UA Hope-Texarkana in April

The committee leading a national job search to find the next chancellor for the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana has announced four finalists.
All are scheduled to make campus visits this month.
The finalists are:
Timothy Cornelius, academic vice president of career and workforce education at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville. His previous roles include dean and interim associate vice president of the Business and Computer Information Division at NWACC, adjunct professor at Texas A&M University-Texarkana and division manager/corporate counsel/vice president/controller at Pyramid Plastics. Cornelius has also worked as an attorney and was named a Sam Walton Fellow. He holds a juris doctorate from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a master of business administration from Texas A&M University-Texarkana and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas A&M University-Texarkana. ....

Local scholarship funds honors late 2019 L-EHS graduate
Jaden Corwin-Ray Phillips (May 15, 2001 - May 20, 2020), a 2019 Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) graduate died just a few days before his 19th birthday last May following a boating incident on the Congaree River in Richland County. A memorial scholarship fund has been established in his honor, open to graduating L-EHS seniors who plan to attend a college, university, community college or vocational/technical school.
A memorial scholarship fund has been established to honor the life and legacy of Jaden Corwin-Ray Phillips (2001–2020), an Elgin, South Carolina teenager who died following a boat wreck in May of 2020. The fund will be housed at Central Carolina Community Foundation. Sanford native to premiere first film

Sanford native, Jessica B. Smith, used her love for writing to create a script for her first movie, Elle Rose,  a romantic comedy inspired by the ones she loved growing up. 
Smith, a Lee Senior graduate, will release her first movie which she wrote, directed and starred in and which also features Hope Mills native Shaun McMillan. 
Smith said the movie was inspired by her love for Black romance movies such as Love & Basketball and Brown Sugar.
I love Love & Basketball. Love & Basketball came out when I was in high school. I fell in love with the movie, and I never stopped loving it, Smith said. It is one of my favorite movies ever. I just love the story of two very close friends falling in love  I love that. Another one of my favorite movies is Brown Sugar, again, it s the same story, basically. I ve always wanted to write something like that.   ....
