The mother of the man who police say opened fire on officers while they were serving a search warrant at his San Luis Obispo apartment on Monday says her son had been struggling with mental health issues during the pandemic.
San Luis Obispo Police Det. Luca Benedetti was killed in the shooting. Det. Steve Orozco was injured.
The suspect, Edward Zamora Giron, was struck by officers return fire but ultimately died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Giron s mother, Caroline Wichman, says he was devastated after losing his jobs at The Pad Climbing gym and Costco after COVID-19 hit. ....

Morro Bay in Bloom beautifies the Embarcadero, one flower at a time

One of the first areas that
Morro Bay in Bloom adopted was along the Embarcadero waterfront, where volunteers planted red geraniums about four years ago. Recently the geraniums were looking a little sad, founder Walter Heath said.
Really it was a result of being in lockdown for 90 days so they weren t getting enough water and that kind of stuff, Heath said.

Wellness Kickoff event will feature a re-brand of SLO Hotline

It s not too late to take time to recharge and refocus your goals for 2021 while supporting a good cause.
Verdin Marketing is hosting a virtual Wellness Kickoff event this Thursday at 4 p.m. in partnership with Transitions Mental Health Association.
That event will be time for people to take a step back, take a deep breath and really focus on themselves and get grounded, Verdin said.
During the event, there will be live music and drawings for wellness-oriented prizes.
Verdin says Verdin Marketing has been working with Transitions to put a full-month long media campaign focused on the re-brand of SLO Hotline to Central Coast Hotline. The SLO Hotline is a 24-hour 800-number for community members to call in times of crisis, for those or others experiencing suicidal thoughts, and as a resource. ....
