With the Queen to thank for this long weekend, we thought we’d take a look at the New Zealand towns named after Elizabeth II and her whānau.
Given the huge number of places named after British military types, I was surprised to find there aren’t many. Queenstown, Kingston and Alexandra are the only three settlements in Aotearoa said to be named after royals, perhaps as a result of the anti-royalist attitudes of the long-defunct New Zealand company, which essentially tried to turn us into a Little Britain. ....

Hard-hit South Island tourist regions have scooped up the bulk of government spending in a rescue package, with the allocation yet to be determined to what was a key international gateway; Auckland.
Of 12 key points in a $200 million Tourism Communities Plan, half are focused on the most vulnerable South Island regions: Fiordland, South Westland, Queenstown Lakes, Mackenzie District and Kaikōura. ....

New Takapō/Tekapo business targets outdoors activities


Grimmett said the company’s customer base was a mix of the domestic and international markets, and Covid-19 has meant they “definitely, like everybody else in our neighbourhood, have felt a little bit of the pain of no tourists”.
“But the decision for us to come to Takapō/Tekapo has been on the cards for quite a long time and we’re committed to doing it.”
