A mad scramble for money marked the April 2020 start of a $349 billion federal COVID-relief loan program that ran dry within two weeks. Afraid it wouldn’t even last that long, business owners deluged bankers with pleas for rapid issuance of the lifesaving loans.
“The biggest concern we all had was that the money would run out that first weekend,” says Aaron Anker, an owner and self-proclaimed chief granola officer at Grandy Oats, a Hiram-based maker of organic granola, trail mixes, roasted nuts and cereal that employs more than 30. “When the first round came out, I was on the phone with my banker until all hours.” ....

Maine senator calls for crackdown on ‘snake oil and fine print’ payday loans
State Sen. Rick Bennett of Oxford calls for limits on how much lenders can charge for short-term loans to hard-pressed Mainers.

Desperate for cash and unable to access traditional lenders for all sorts of reasons, some Mainers turn to financial outfits that give out payday loans with terms that are sometimes impossible to pay back.
In a bid to offer better protection, state Sen. Rick Bennett, R-Oxford, told a legislative committee this week that too many Mainers are “misinformed, bilked, conned and abused by unscrupulous predator lenders, often when they are in dire personal circumstances as well and most vulnerable to snake oil and fine print.” ....
