Governor Janet Mills today released her Administration’s Part 2 budget proposal for the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 biennium, which – for the first time in Maine’s history – meets the State’s obligation to pay 55 percent of the cost of K-12 education.

AUGUSTA A 2-acre park hidden away in the heart of busy and heavily developed north Augusta, is getting spruced up by a combination of volunteers, businesses and the city.
Maintenance of Kennebec Valley Garden Club Park, created in the mid-1970s at the urging of the late philanthropist Elsie Viles, had fallen off in recent years. Many members of the regional garden club who took care of it previously grew older or busy with other projects to maintain the park that surrounds a 1-acre pond at the site between Civic Center Drive, Uni ....

Legislators weigh whether to require free tampons and pads in Maine schools

“It isn’t only an issue of fairness or even of affordability,” said Grace Leavitt, president of the Maine Education Association. “Having access to menstrual products can help to positively impact a girl’s confidence and thus even affect her future.”
Advocates told the Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs that many youngsters struggle to pay for sanitary products such as tampons and pads. As many as one in four have missed classes as a result, they said.
But for many of those testifying, it’s also an issue of equity.
“Half of the population get their period, and so we should at least be able to supply items to help them,” said 11-year-old Astrid Whitton, a South Portland sixth grader. ....
