CORNWALL, Ontario – Its been called the silent pandemic. More than a year after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region, workers in crisis organizations like Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) for Women, the Children’s Aid Society (CAS), and Maison Baldwin House say that they are starting to see the pandemic strain the mental health of the public and it is a problem that is becoming a pandemic in and of itself.
Angela Vinet of SASS for her part says that her organization is seen an increase of 126 clients from the same time last year and that they currently have nearly 400 active clients they are working with. ....

A Rogers Communications expanded phone program considered a digital lifeline for Ontario women in crisis is being applauded locally.
Debbie Fortier, the Maison Baldwin House executive director, confirmed the shelter, which participated in the Rogers pilot project a year ago, has received more cellphones this year in an expanded effort by the company.

“It’s absolutely wonderful – we’re very happy,” Fortier said on Tuesday.
She said that over the two years for the project, Maison Baldwin House has been provided with a total of 15 phones. ....

COVID-19 cases increase by 116 within EOHU over long weekend

The Easter long weekend saw no respite to the recent increasing COVID-19 caseloads across the Eastern Ontario Health Unit region, as 116 new cases were disclosed Monday.

In the EOHU’s first update to most local stats since Thursday, the increase averaged out to about 30 additional cases per day. Of the new cases, 48 are within Prescott-Russell, 29 within SDG, and 39 within Cornwall. The running total of COVID-19 cases within the region now sits at 3,541. ....
