Kenya: Taita Taveta banana growers sign deal to boost production
After Taita Taveta entered a processing deal with the Micro Enterprises Support Programme Trust, the county’s banana growers expect to benefit from a ready market. According to Taita Taveta governor Granton Samboja, the collaboration will further help in sustaining the multimillion banana sector.
“Smallholder banana growers at the grassroots level will benefit from access to markets and value addition activities hence boost agricultural industrialisation and innovations in the county,” he told star.co.ke. The processing and value addition project is funded by the European Union.
The Taveta area has been the food basket of the Coast region. Experts forecast that growers in the region will expand their banana farming ahead of the completion of the processing plant.
