After meeting for more than a year over Zoom, the Hopewell Borough Council and Pennington Borough Council will return to in-person council meetings starting in August and September, respectively.
Pennington is implementing a phased re-opening of Borough Hall for residents and staff.
Borough Hall began opening to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 12 or by appointment. The Borough Council will transition to having in person council meetings in August.
“All of our boards, commissions and communities that have little to no public interaction have been advised that they can begin meeting in Borough Hall this month of July,” Pennington mayor James Davy said at a council meeting on July 6. “That is in the works and Borough Council will be meeting in person at its meeting in August, as well as planning board will also be afforded that opportunity as well.”
Hopewell Borough Council adopts opt-out ordinance for cannabis businesses
Hopewell Borough Council members have given the governing body time to determine if any classes of the cannabis business will be accepted in the borough.
The council adopted an opt-out ordinance to prohibit all classes of the business on May 6. However, there will not be any limits to the borough to opt-in by choosing to opt-out prior to Aug. 21 deadline set by the new cannabis laws.
Council President Charles Schuyler Morehouse, Councilman Chris Fossel, Councilman David Mackie and Councilwoman Samara McAuliffe voted “yes” on the ordinance during a virtual council meeting on May 6.
Hopewell Borough Council adopts $3.54M budget for municipal operations in 2021
Members of the Hopewell Borough Council adopted a $3.54 million municipal budget to fund the borough’s municipal operations for 2021.
Council President Charles Schuyler Morehouse, Councilman Chris Fossel, Councilman David Mackie and Councilwoman Samara McAuliffe voted “yes” on the budget’s adoption during a virtual council meeting on May 6.
Councilman Ryan Kennedy and Councilwoman Debra Stuhler were absent from the meeting.
“The budget represents a penny tax rate increase from 2020. 2020 was a flat tax rate year, the first one in decades,” Borough Administrator Michele Hovan said during the meeting. “We are using about three pennies in surplus to put this together. We needed to use a little bit of the surplus to keep the tax increase soft. That is the same path we will be on for a little while.”
