Nicolás Maduro: Apathy, sanctions, Biden: the stakes creating momentum in Venezuela's long-running crisis | USA

The possibility of a negotiation between the government of Venezuela and the opposition is growing ever stronger and none of the main players want to be left on the sidelines. The conviction that the current situation benefits nobody is gaining weight and has led all parties involved to reassess their strategies: the executive of Nicolás Maduro, suffocated by sanctions and cut off from the international community; the opposition, almost completely removed from domestic political life and with low popularity ratings; the Venezuelan people, who have been plunged into a devastating economic crisis by the coronavirus pandemic and the informal dollarization carried out over the past year; and the international community, in the realization that the policy of sanctions and a closing of ranks behind the leadership of Juan Guaidó, who they recognized as president-elect, has failed to make a dent in the power of the ruling administration. ....

Maduro's hold on Venezuela tightens as coronavirus surges

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) More than a year after a young U.S.-backed politician rose up to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the socialist leader holds a yet stronger grip on power with a boost from the novel coronavirus.
The Venezuelan opposition hoped that 2020 could bring new momentum after several failed pushes to overthrow Maduro. Then came the coronavirus. Analysts say the pandemic has helped suck away the opposition’s already flagging support.
Fear of contagion has helped keep protesters off the streets, and the virus-driven end of a slight economic upturn has kept Venezuelans focused on daily survival, not politics. ....

President Nicolás Maduro’s ruling socialist party just took control of the last institution in Venezuela it didn’t already control: The National Assembly.
On Tuesday, the regime swore in 277 new lawmakers following last month’s legislative elections, which were marred by fraud, repression, low turnout, and an electoral boycott by most of the opposition. The new lawmakers, almost all Maduro loyalists, immediately voted to end the interim presidency of opposition leader Juan Guaidó.
But Guaidó and his allies have been unwilling to simply step aside. In early December, they held a parallel popular consultation on rejecting the Maduro government. Then, in a separate move last month, they voted to extend a legislative mandate they received after the opposition won a landslide victory in the 2015 elections. In the name of “constitutional continuity,” they ....

Disorder on the Border: Keeping the Peace between Colombia and Venezuela

What’s new? Crime and violence have simmered along the lengthy Colombian-Venezuelan frontier for decades. But the regional spillover of Venezuela’s political conflict and economic collapse has caused ties between the two states to fray as well, amid border closures, a migrant exodus and rival military exercises.
Why does it matter? Numerous armed groups clash with one another and harm citizens along a border marked by abundant coca crops and informal crossings. High bilateral tensions could spur escalating border hostilities while perpetuating the mistreatment of migrants and refugees whose movements have been restricted by COVID-19.
What should be done? Colombian and Venezuelan authorities should urgently establish communication channels to resolve violent incidents along the border, possibly with international backing. They should reopen formal border crossings as planned, but also increase humanitarian aid to help ensure that migrants and refugees are healthy ....
