Trailblazing musicians: Honoring women composers
Michigan State University College of Music artists will showcase women musicians who broke barriers in the world of music through a live broadcast event that wraps the 11th season of the Joanne and Bill Church West Circle Series. “Trailblazers: Celebrating Women in Music” premieres at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 19
on the MSU College of Music Livestream Channel. The broadcast will include new recordings captured at MSU’s Fairchild Theatre. 
The concert theme, “Trailblazers,” signifies the courage of women musicians to push forward despite their artistry being ignored or downplayed. Featured works will highlight the contributions and influence women have had in a variety of musical genres and styles. The event weaves together compositions by Amy Beach, Florence Price, Lena McLin, Ann Ronell, Mary Lou Williams and Keiko Abe.   ....

Roni Ben-Hur includes a fascinating collection of “Stories” from his genre-busting 40-year multicultural musical journey. “Recording ‘Stories’ has been a unique and very fulfilling experience,” the Israeli-born Ben-Hur says, “allowing me to incorporate songs I loved since my childhood, and ones that speak to social issues that are important to me.” Joining him is the legendary George Cables on piano, esteemed trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, and the steadfast rhythm section of bassist Harvie S and drummer Victor Lewis.

Dr. Lonnie Smith – “Breathe”
For over 60 years Lonnie Smith has been amazing audiences worldwide with his incredible and unique playing at the organ. Originally from Lackwawana NY, a Buffalo suburb, Smith moved to NYC in the early 1960s where he became George Benson’s organist. Lonnie has always had an affinity for soul music after singing in vocal harmony groups as a teenager, due to this love he has always melded soul and RnB licks into his playing thus earning one of his nicknames, the Dr. because of doctoring up the songs he performed, he is also known as “The Turbanator”. For his latest recording on Blue Note Records his home since 1967, he is accompanied by 2 Jonathans, Kreisberg on guitar and Blake on drums. Dr. Lonnie Smith played at KUVO’s former Phyllis A. Greer Performance studio with Javon ....
