Several schools are hiring teachers due to retirements and changes to student enrollment. As aging teachers retire and with changes to enrollment in education programs, schools in New York state are in need of teachers. According to statistics from New York State United Teachers there were more than 51,000 teachers in 2018 over the age of 55 and almost 36,000 aged 51-54 enrolled in the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System. That means that of the 264,590 members of the NYSTRS, approximately one-third are able or will soon be able to retire. ....
[email protected] WESTFIELD Westfield Academy and Central School Board of Education members received a presentation from Kimberly Alonge, Westfield Academy and Central School business teacher, on creating the school yearbook at the board’s recent regular meeting. Alonge shared her personal enthusiasm for producing the yearbook. “I was a WACS yearbook staff member myself,” she said. “It’s my passion, I talk about it 24/7 365 days a year.” Alonge told the board that she sees what she refers to as “the blossom effect” every year with students who join the yearbook staff. “These kids find talent within themselves,” she said. “They grow in confidence and develop relationships that last a lifetime.” ....
Buffalo Bill Harrison Phillips read âSneetchesâ to Westfield classes this month. Westfield teachers, students and administrators take part in Read Across America. Westfield Elementary School celebrated Read Across America on March 2nd with many guest readers and activities that reinforced the concept of same and different. The highlight of the day was well-known Buffalo Bill, defensive lineman Harrison Phillips, No. 99, reading the Dr. Seuss book, “Sneetches,” via zoom. All students in grades pre-K through 5 were able to participate. The celebration of reading had many components for the students to participate with their class. Photo opportunities were given for individual and groups in a safe manner throughout the day. Children created a Sneetch craft project and worked on thematic packets at their level.
