Montgomery artists featured in April 8 Confederate Reckoning event

The USA TODAY Network South and The Advertiser present a conversation on how arts will define and advance the future of Montgomery.
The event, which will be broadcast live on YouTube, at 6 p.m. CDT/7 p.m. EDT on Thursday, April 8, is part of the Confederate Reckoning series, examining the past in order to create a better future.
The guests are Michelle Browder and Kevin King, artists, entrepreneurs and community leaders who are using art to advance critical discussions on equity, racial justice and inclusion.

Alabama artist Michelle Browder, pictured, is in town working at San Francisco’s Box Shop in Hunters Point to build a 15-foot public monument, “Mothers of Gynecology.” The sculpture will honor Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy, enslaved women from plantations in and around Montgomery, Ala., who were experimented on in the 1840s by the so-called “father of gynecology,” Dr. J Marion Sims. You may have heard of Dr. J. Marion Sims, the so-called “father of modern gynecology.” It’s less likely you know the “mothers of gynecology.”
In the mid-1800s in Montgomery, Sims conducted experimental surgeries on about 11 enslaved women. None of them gave consent to be operated on. None of them received anesthesia. Their suffering has largely been forgotten, overshadowed by Sims’ medical achievements. ....
