Obituary: Helen McCrory, formidable actress who dazzled on stage and in Peaky Blinders

Died: April 16, 2021.
RARELY will the loss of an actor register so powerfully and profoundly with theatre and television audiences than the death of Helen McCrory.
McCrory was almost omnipresent on our screens and theatre stages in the past two decades, and the judgment of all those casting directors cannot be questioned.
Helen McCrory was a rarity in that she could convey sexiness with a flicker of an eyelid, or a raising of a cheekbone (as an MP in the Bond film, Skyfall); she could illustrate menace with a sharp stare of her raven eyes (the Brummie matriarch in Peaky Blinders) and indeed a sparkling sense of fun, with the merest hint of a smile (as Cherie Blair in The Queen). ....

Helen McCrory, who has died of cancer aged 52, made her name as a subtle and intelligent stage performer, and later bucked the trend that consigns actresses to oblivion in middle age, becoming one of Britain’s most sought-after television stars in her 40s.
In the first decade of the new millennium she was hailed as one of the most promising presences in British theatre. Writing in the Telegraph in 2002, Jasper Rees placed her in the tradition of Judi Dench, Zoë Wanamaker and Imelda Staunton as “the small, punchy actress with a voice that can coat a back wall in honey from 100 paces.” ....

Helen McCrory, who has died of cancer aged 52, was already established among the leading stage actors of her generation when she became known as Cherie Blair in Stephen Frears’s movie The Queen (2006), starring Helen Mirren, and with Michael Sheen as Tony; and as the witch Narcissa Malfoy, mother of Draco, in the last three Harry Potter films.
Her brisk and slinky Cherie Blair was one in a line of suited authority figures and lawyers played by McCrory, culminating in an acidulous, brutally frank but deluded Tory prime minister in David Hare’s television drama Roadkill (2020), refusing to give a “big job” to Hugh Laurie’s shameless MP. In comparison, Narcissa was a “turn,” a Gothic hoot, for all her verve and suffocating evil. ....

Helen McCrory s early life
Born in 1968 in London, Helen McCrory was raised by Ann (née Morgans) — her Welsh mother and Iain McCrory — her diplomat father from Glasgow. Eldest of three children, she studied at Queenswood School near Hatfield, Hertfordshire and spent a year in Italy. Once she stepped back in British soil, she took lessons at the Drama Centre in London.
In 1990, she started her theatre career on stage and won many hearts with plays including ‘The Deep Blue Sea’ and ‘Medea’. The role that got her closer to her fans was Narcissa Malfoy — the wife of Lucius Malfoy and Draco s mother — in ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Part 2’. She also played former Prime Minister Tony Blair s wife Cherie in the films ‘The Queen’ and ‘The Special Relationship’, and also gave voice to Stelmaria, Lord Asriel s snow leopard daemon in ....
