In the past year alone, 986 people have been shot and killed by the police. That’s 986 too many. Knowing this, a logical solution would be to take away guns from police, but changing weapons is not enough. We need far more in-depth change to the entire policing system to stop police brutality, and this change needs to extend to Syracuse, too. The police officer who shot Daunte Wright in Minnesota claimed the killing was an accident. She said that she meant to reach for her Taser but instead pulled her gun. But why would a police officer use a Taser on a resident after pulling him over for a small traffic violation? Police should be de-escalating situations, not escalating them. ....

Opinion on the Capitol attack ran the gamut: an all-out assault on liberty and freedom, to white supremacy run amok, to the end of all civilization as we know it. Starting right in the nation’s capital, Hannah Thacker in George Washington University’s The Hatchet writes that the “only reason right-wing mobs got away [they got away with it?] with an insurrection” was because they were white. “I can only wonder how Jan. 6, 2021 would have unfolded if these rioters were Black,” she says. ....

It is undeniable that, over his presidency, Trump has drastically deepened the division in the United States. Most recently, his commitment to sowing doubt in Americans’ minds about our voting systems. It is tragic but not surprising that his cult-like following resorted to violence to “stop the steal” of the 2020 election. ....
