It appears the Leavenworth County government will not be taking over a private prison. Commissioners voted Wednesday to notify CoreCivic of their decision not to move forward with a proposal from the company. “I don’t see any way we can do this,” Commissioner Doug Smith said. CoreCivic officials had proposed the county take over the operation of the company’s Leavenworth Detention Center, which houses pretrial detainees for the U.S. Marshals Service. Company officials made the proposal after President Joe Biden issued an executive order in January that prohibits the U.S. attorney general from renewing Department of Justice contracts with privately-operated detention facilities. The U.S. Marshals Service is an agency of the Justice Department. ....
The Leavenworth Times The chairman of the Leavenworth County Commission wants to know the potential financial benefit if the county government takes over a private prison. “What is the benefit to the county for doing this?” Chairman Mike Smith said. He and the other members of the County Commission met Thursday for a work session to discuss a proposal from CoreCivic. CoreCivic operates the Leavenworth Detention Center, a private prison that houses pretrial detainees for the U.S. Marshals Service. Representatives of the Tennessee-based CoreCivic met with commissioners last week. The company officials proposed the county take over operations of the Leavenworth facility. ....
Leavenworth County commissioners ended up taking no action Thursday regarding the governor’s new mask order. That is because the order already was struck down by members of the state’s Legislative Coordinating Council. County commissioners previously exempted Leavenworth County from statewide mask orders issued by Gov. Laura Kelly. As a result of a new state emergency management law, all of Kelly’s executive orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic expired Wednesday. The governor had announced that she planned to reissue a number of executive orders Thursday including an order that requires people to wear face coverings in public spaces in Kansas. ....
The Leavenworth Times A Leavenworth County commissioner suggested Wednesday the county government ask people to sign a consent waiver before receiving a dose of the new Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. Commissioner Mike Stieben wants people receiving the vaccine to understand it was developed using cell lines derived from aborted fetuses. Commissioners ultimately discussed developing an information sheet about the vaccine instead of requiring a signed waiver. So far, the Leavenworth County Health Department has administered only doses of a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The Health Department has not received doses of the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Stieben raised the issue during a weekly meeting of the County Commission. ....
The Leavenworth Times The assessed value for property in Leavenworth County has increased this year by 8.37%, according to the county appraiser. Increases in assessed valuation can lead to higher taxes for property owners, but the county appraiser does not set property tax rates. Changes in the assessed value of individual properties may vary from the overall increase for the county. County Appraiser Bob Weber reviewed the valuation increase Wednesday when he presented a quarterly report to Leavenworth County commissioners. According to Weber’s report, the total assessed value of real estate in Leavenworth County increased from $721.69 million in 2020 to $782.12 million in 2021. ....
