People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has asked the City of Ham Lake, Minnesota to change its name to Yam Lake. PETA says that the new name would be more pig-friendly, (Yes, really.)
The city in Anoka County is named after the lake that reminded early settlers of the shape of a ham, but PETA says it also resembles a yam.
In a press release, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk says:
Pigs are smart, sensitive, wonderful individuals, so if we have a heart, we’ll leave their legs alone and choose yams over hams. PETA envisions a new ‘Yam Lake’ that promotes kindness and healthy eating. ....

ALMA, Wis. (WKBT) Buffalo County, Wis., officials might want to keep a low profile around members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals or they could face a dilemma like the one PETA presented to the mayor of Ham Lake, Minn.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk wrote to Mayor Mike Van Kirk last week taking issue with the city’s name, insisting that it disrespects pigs and suggesting an alternative.
