According to the New York Times, the vaccines have nearly eliminated death, hospitalization and other serious COVID illness among people who have received shots. The paper also says vaccines have radically reduced the chances that people contract even a mild version of COVID or can pass it on to others.   More than 130 million people in the U.S. have gotten at least one dose. COVID infections have plummeted as a result of that. But still, shots go unused in some areas. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, infections rise because no vaccines are available.

David Brewer principal honored

David Brewer principal honored The Leavenworth Times When he came to the Leavenworth school district, Superintendent Mike Roth said David Brewer Elementary School was was one of the schools identified as needing attention. A year later, Craig Idacavage was hired to be the principal of David Brewer Elementary. “You could almost sense an immediate change in the way the building was going,” Roth said. Now in his sixth year at the helm of David Brewer, Idacavage has been recognized by the Kansas Principals Association as the Elementary Principal of the Year for this region of the state. “I’m honored,” Idacavage said.

Leavenworth Education Foundation hosts virtual breakfast

The Leavenworth Times Last year, the annual breakfast of the Leavenworth Public Schools Education Foundation was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event returned this year. But the 20th annual Foundation Breakfast was conducted in a virtual format. “We are adjusting to the times,” Foundation Director Catey Edwards said in a program that was livestreamed Tuesday on the internet. Ahead of Tuesday’s program, donors to the foundation received boxes that included pancake mix and bacon sticks. Edwards said the “breakfast in a box” was a way for foundation members “to celebrate with you as we show our appreciation for you.”

Leavenworth school board authorizes additional money for school construction projects

The Leavenworth Times Leavenworth school board members voted this week to spend an additional $395,831 for school construction projects in addition to what was approved in a 2018 bond issue. Board members also voted to provide employees of the school district bonuses for working during the COVID-19 pandemic. Voters in the school district approved a $36.7 million bond issue in 2018 to pay things such as a new intermediate school and converting a former elementary school into an early education center. Superintendent Mike Roth said about $1.5 million from the school district’s capital outlay fund previously was added to the money generated from the bond issue. This increased the total money available for the school construction projects to more than $38 million.
