VCU Changes Adjunct Policies as Professors Seek Better Compensation

Amid a push by adjuncts for increased pay and benefits, Virginia Commonwealth University is changing how it classifies professors. An email notifying the coming policy change was sent days after VCU adjuncts announced they’d formed a union.
In her email, VCU Provost Gail Hackett told the heads of several schools the university will seek to cap course loads for adjuncts to six credits per semester. Previously, an adjunct professor could teach up to nine credits per semester and still qualify as a part-time employee. ....

Flavor 1st Growers & Packers, which supplies customers up and down the East Coast and east of the Mississippi, has deep roots in the produce industry.
Mountain Bean Growers Inc., one of the largest production operations in Western North Carolina, heads up the company’s farming operations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia.
“We’re growing tomatoes and vegetables in Georgia and North Florida, which bridges the gap,” said Mike Porter, sales representative for the Mills River, NC-based company. “We’re doing all the dry-veg items beans, squash, Bell peppers, cucumbers in Georgia, and also doing grape tomatoes and round tomatoes.” ....

A student at Virginia Commonwealth University is receiving threats and insults online after their political speech was made the focus of a right-wing media article.
Taylor Maloney, a 20-year old student and the president of the VCU Student Government Association, says they’ve received hundreds of negative comments on social media criticizing their anti-police comments and communist political views.
The article was published by Canadian outlet The Post Millennial, a conservative website that claims “to accurately and adequately report Canadian news events.” As of the time this story was published, the article had received over 15,000 views, and hundreds of comments on social media. ....

Georgia growers credit soil for strong crops

Produce in Georgia that display the Georgia Grown label are strong sellers in the state, as consumers know to trust these locally-grown products. 
Duke Lane, one of the partners in the Fort Valley, GA-based Genuine Georgia Group, credits the leadership of the state’s Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and his team for helping Georgia’s farmers survive and thrive by championing this program.
Lane also says Georgia growers do well because many are fifth- and sixth-generation family farmers who are dedicated to doing things the correct way. Plus, Georgia has a soil composition and growing environment that is considered one of the sweetest spots on earth, and its proximity to the Eastern United States keeps the state’s products the freshest in the nation. ....
