Bristol Photo Festival's summer 2021 exhibitions to launch


A symposium on inclusive collaboration and commitment to change will also be held on May 21. Keynote speaker Vanley Burke will be joined by speakers including Joy Gregrory, Dexter McLean, David Constantine, Joanne Coates, Kirsty MacKay and Dr Shawn Sobers.

Despite being in the works before the pandemic, Chris Hoare’s new photo book Growing Spaces takes on a new appeal in light of the past year, which has recalibrated our relationship with the outdoors and seen an uptick in interest in gardening.
The Bristol-born photographer was originally commissioned to create the series by Bristol Photo Festival, and will be exhibiting it at the inaugural edition this summer.
At the heart of Growing Spaces is the breadth of communities and demographics who engage with gardening and tend allotments, from the elderly to children and entire families. ....

Documenting the city’s growing spaces

A project by the new Bristol Photo Festival is exploring the relationship growing produce and photography.
Growing Spaces, which has been running since lockdown began in March 2020, is documenting the city’s produce growers.
Looking at allotments and allotment holders, their histories and stories, the festival wants to document the visual and oral history of these people.

The project is a collaboration between the public, photographers who are together building an archive of stories showing the the importance of these spaces, from gorilla allotments to citywide food projects. ....
