Don t suppress the peoples vote
The 2020 election was the most successful and secure in Michigan history. Michiganders voted in record numbers with 5.5 million ballots cast, 3.5 million via no-reason absentee. Now, our state senators are proposing solutions in search of a problem by introducing 39 bills to make it harder to exercise our fundamental right to vote. Why?
This flies in the face of the will of Michigan voters who passed Proposal 3 in 2018 to make voting easier and more secure with 67% of the vote. As a former civics and government teacher, I urge my fellow citizens and Sen. Tom Barrett to oppose SB 273-311 which are an affront to our democracy. What happened to We the People? ....

Lawsuit: Informant led Ingham County, MSP to arrest wrong man for drugs

LANSING A Lansing man is suing five police officers, Ingham County and a confidential police informant for what he says was a mistaken identity arrest.
The five officers four from Michigan State Police and one from the Ingham County Sheriff s Office were working with a confidential informant who told them a man named Al Jessup could sell him heroin and cocaine, according to a police report.
According to the lawsuit, the informant lied to police about the seller s identity and police were reckless in relying on the information.
Police bought drugs twice from a man they believed to be Jessup, using their informant as the buyer, according to the police report. ....

Prosecutors: Force LPD officers used in arrest not criminal

LANSING Ingham County prosecutors have declined to file charges against three Lansing Police Department officers accused of using excessive force during an arrest in November.
The three officers Alex Rojas, Alec Slobin and Morgan Schafer were on paid administrative leave while Michigan State Police and the prosecutor s office investigated. A bystander caught part of the arrest on camera.
Prosecutors called the officers actions during the arrest concerning, but said it did not rise to the level of criminal charges being warranted.
While much of the police behavior was concerning in light of our changing societal norms, and historical wrongs, the officers’ actions did not rise to the level of a violation of the criminal law, when reviewed in light of laws and policies in place at the time of this event, Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Mike Cheltenham wrote in a memo to MSP.
