Georgia Governor Signs Bill That Limits Decreasing of Police Funding


The legislation was passed by the Georgia House of Representatives during the 2021 Georgia General Assembly session, with three Democrats voting in favor of the bill.

(CN) A bill signed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on Friday restricts the amounts of reductions local governments can make in funding law enforcement to no more than 5% annually.
Kemp, a Republican, signed House Bill 286 at a gun range at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and took aim at calls to “defund the police.” ....

GA House Weighing Legislation to End Concealed Permit Requirement

The Georgia House is weighing legislation to end the state’s requirement that law-abiding citizens acquire a permit from the state in order to carry a handgun for self-defense.
The legislation, House Bill 110, is sponsored by five Republican State Reps and one Democrat. Those Reps. are Clark Heath (R), Steve Tarvin (R), Emory Donahoo (R), Joseph Gullet (R) , Danny Mathis (R), and Mike Glanton (D).
The text of HB110 says:
To amend Part 1 of Article 1 of Chapter 3 of Title 12, Title 16, and Title 27 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions regarding parks, historic areas, memorials, and recreation, crimes and offenses, and game and fish, respectively, so as to allow persons who are eligible for a weapons carry license to lawfully carry a weapon without such license. ....

House Education Committee
The House Education Committee, chaired by Representative Matt Dubnik (R-Gainesville), met this morning to consider two bills and hear a presentation from State School Superintendent Richard Woods.
HB 32, authored by Representative Dave Belton (R-Buckhead), amends O.C.G.A. 20-2-251 to require the State Board of Education to create a teacher recruitment and retention program by providing a refundable tax credit of $3,000 per qualifying teacher per year, for up to five school years. The department must pick no more than 100 schools from the list of qualifying schools to become a part of the program. The Office of Student Achievement is required to create program objectives and annually measure and evaluate the program. The program is limited to 1,000 teachers statewide. No new applications to the program can be accepted after December 31, 2031. Representative Belton presented the bill to the committee and fielded questions. ....
