Our Truth, Tā Mātou Pono: In the eye of the taniwha - the lived experience of pandemic racism

ROSA WOODS/STUFF
Mike Kawana, Rangitāne o Wairarapa kaumātua, talks about the impact of the 1918 influenza pandemic experience on his whānau.
The supernatural concept of taniwha has always held a significant place within Māori culture.
The mere mention of the term conjures up stereotypical images of reptilian, fire-breathing dragons who could often be found lurking in watery lairs or caves or deep forests - places where humans dare not tread.
More than a century before Covid-19 turned the world upside down, the unfamiliar, yet merciless taniwha of influenza threatened the future of Te Ore Ore Marae, near Masterton. ....

Rare white kiwi, Manukura, dies following surgery

Court said yesterday was one of the saddest days the wildlife centre had ever experienced.
“Manukura is very much a part of the Pūkaha family, and we have always felt so blessed to have Manukura to help us to tell Aotearoa’s conservation story.”

Manukura was the first of three white kiwi hatched at Pūkaha during the 2011-2012 breeding season. There are records of white kiwi in the wild, but they are rare. ....

Police urged to conduct national review after photos illegally taken of young Māori

The news has shattered local iwi.
Rangitāne spokesperson Mike Kawana said the relationship between Māori and police had been moving in the right direction.
You know, you think you ve got to a point where relationships are good and you re moving forward and then stuff like this happens. It really is disappointing, he said.
He had no doubt this behaviour was happening elsewhere, and would like to see a national review of all youth photographs captured by police.
They need to look at themselves really closely and have some kind of way of calling out what is clearly racism. You can t get past that. ....
