Dawn SWAT: The people of Kalam and Utror areas here on Sunday agreed to cease fire on the request of a jirga. An armed clash over a pasture dispute had left five people from both the sides dead and 14 others injured on Saturday morning. As many as 22 persons from both the sides were taken hostage. However, to stop further bloodshed the district administration had formed a jirga of elders from different parts of Upper Swat. The elders met members of both the groups on Sunday morning and motivated them to withdraw from the disputed land. “Afterwards, both the sides vacated the disputed land and released the hostages on the request of jirga. They also handed over the bodies to their families,” Upper Swat Superintendent of Police Darwaish Khan said, adding the situation in the area was calm as police and security personnel had been deployed to ward off any unpleasant incident. ....
SWAT: Five persons were killed and over a dozen sustained critical injuries when residents of Kalam and Utror areas traded fire over a disputed pasture on Saturday morning. The Kalam police said four persons died from Utror and one from Kalam, adding the clash also left 14 persons from both the sides injured. The injured people of Kalam were shifted to the Madyan and Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospitals, the police said, adding the people of Kalam attacked a police mobile when it was taking the injured people from Utror area to the Madyan hospital. The people of Matiltan, an area near Kalam, said that there had been disputes between the residents of Kalam and Utror valleys over a disputed pasture locally known as ‘mugs pait’. ....
Water likely to be released into Machi Branch soon July 1, 2021 PESHAWAR: The suffering of farmers in Malakand, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera districts is likely to end soon as the government is set to release water into the Machi Branch of Upper Swat Canal in the coming few days, according to Secretary Irrigation Tahir Orakzai. The farmers have been anxiously waiting for the restoration of water supply in the Machi branch of Upper Swat canal as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is constantly working to repair the affected breach in Kharki village. Water supply was suspended to hundreds of thousands of acres of land from the Machi Branch of Upper Swat Canal to the four districts after a breach in the main canal June 18, 2021. It caused huge losses to standing crops, particularly the sugarcane, tobacco, maize and orchards and vegetables in these areas as there was no alternative source of water supply to these areas. ....
