Protections sought for Upper Pecos watershed in northern New Mexico

Ralph Vigil s farm in Pecos, New Mexico depends on the Pecos River as it has for 13 years, the same river that runs across almost the entire eastern side of the state, crossing its southern border with Texas in the southeast corner.
What happens in the headwaters of the Pecos where Vigil grows vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes has a direct impact, he said, on the rest of the river – even hundreds of miles south cities like Roswell or Carlsbad.
Our watersheds are extremely important to a lot of our traditional communities in New Mexico. The health of that watershed is vital, Vigil said. If we don’t have healthy watersheds, we don’t have healthy communities beneath them. ....

New Mexico Wild statement on Pecos River being named one of the nation's most endangered

Commentary: New Mexico Wild Executive Director Mark Allison issued the following statement on the inclusion of the Pecos River in American Rivers’ annual Most Endangered Rivers report:
“The Upper Pecos River Watershed is far richer for its cultural, historical, habitat and recreational values than it is for any potential mineral development. The river’s presence on the 2021 Most Endangered Rivers report emphasizes just how critical it is that we act now to protect it before it’s too late,”
said Mark Allison, New Mexico Wild Executive Director. “The surrounding communities have fresh memories from the devastation wrought by past mining activities that polluted the river, killed tens of thousands of fish, and severely damaged the area’s outdoor recreation economy for decades. We call on New Mexico’s leaders to remember all possible threats to the long-term viability of the Pecos River as they consider a petition by local stakeholders ....
