Valley News - As NH's mask mandate expires, city and town rules remain in place

As NH’s mask mandate expires, city and town rules remain in place
Virginia Clerkin wears a mask while walking down South Main Street in Hanover, N.H., where she is the manager of J. Crew, Monday, July 27, 2020. The Town of Hanover will hold a public hearing on a mask ordinance next week. Currently signs throughout the downtown area request the use of face masks. A short time later Dwight Campbell, of West Lebanon, passed by on his way to a meeting with a friend and said he was pleased to see the majority of people on the street wearing masks. “I’m sorry that there’s a particular confusion between notions of personal freedom and simple things that people can do to protect themselves and others,” said Campbell, a retired surgeon, of those that don’t wear face coverings. LEBANON The money will be helpful.
Upper Valley businesses and residents alike said they are looking forward to the influx of cash provided under the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that President Joe Biden signed into law last week, including $1,400 direct payments for the vast majority of American adults and dependents.
Some are going to put those checks to work locally, and soon.
“I’m going to spend it on buying local art,” Sonja Olson, a printmaker from Woodstock, said as she emerged from Kohl’s in West Lebanon on a chilly Saturday morning. “I spent all of the previous $600 check on buying art at Long River Gallery in White River Junction. I want to support our artists.” ....

Forum, March 8: City’s property value increase is a good sign

Increase in city’s property value is a good sign
Saturday’s edition of the
Valley News included a paid political advertisement that referred to a 17.8% increase in Lebanon’s total assessed property values between 2015 and 2020. This reference might be interpreted to suggest that an increase in the value of total real property in the city is related to increased property taxes. As a city councilor, I want to ensure that accurate information is being provided to residents.
It is important to understand that a general increase in property values over time is an indicator of a healthy and growing local economy. Higher property values reflect the desirability of a town or city to buyers. A trend toward decreasing property values over time would not be a good sign, and would be typical of a community with a declining economy. ....

Anonymous mailing is not persuasive
As new residents of the city of Lebanon we have been receiving informational mail in connection the upcoming election on Tuesday. We have worked on political campaigns and for civic causes, which we support, for most of our adult lives, and value receiving voter information and even requests of support.
However, we find it disturbing to have received a hand-addressed postcard urging us to vote in a particular way on Lebanon’s school resource officer position that contains no attribution. We think it is both essential and respectful to let constituents know who is asking for a vote or support on any civic matter. We cannot consider following a request of this type unless we know who or what organization made the request. ....

LEBANON Candidates running to replace three outgoing members of the Lebanon School Board are divided over the district’s future priorities.
One group wants to see the city’s aging school buildings upgraded and a high value placed on new programs and services for Lebanon’s 1,600 students. Meanwhile, another trio say they wants to provide children with a quality education, but one that doesn’t come at the cost of overburdening lower-income and elderly households. ....
