The U.S. looks set for its first week since mid-September in which daily coronavirus cases have not exceeded 50,000.
The European Union approved a contract with Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE for as many as 1.8 billion vaccine doses as the region bulks up its vaccination campaign through 2023.
In India, more than 4,000 daily deaths were recorded in the latest sign the pandemic is intensifying in the world’s worst-hit nation.

Thailand plans to purchase 35 million more doses of Covid-19 vaccines on top of the 65 million it has already contracted amid criticism of a slow start of the vaccination campaign. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha’s announcement on his Facebook comes as Thailand is battling a third wave of infections that has resulted in record daily cases. Health authorities on Wednesday announced 1,458 new confirmed cases and two deaths, bringing the totals to 46,643 cases including 110 deaths.
Prayuth’s administration has been sharply criticised for failing to secure enough vaccines, with only about 2 million doses from AstraZeneca and China’s Sinovac delivered so far and most of the remainder due starting in June. ....

Over five lakh people in Assam aged 45 years and above and irrespective of co-morbidities have registered for vaccination
GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday appealed to all eligible people to get themselves vaccinated saying that the state has a vaccine stock of over five lakh doses and another one lakh is expected to arrive soon.
Earlier, the state health department had to rationalize the vaccination programme after stocks started dwindling in the absence of arrival of more vaccine doses. On Tuesday, the vaccine stock was about 1.4 lakh.
Amid reports of shortage in vaccines in the state, Sarma on Friday tweeted, “As of now, we have the following stocks: 1.Covishield ~ 3.25 lakh dose 2.Covaxin ~ 2 lakh dose Another batch of about one lakh Covaxin dose will arrive in a day or two. I request everyone eligible to please go in for your vaccination.” ....
