On the Road: AAA predicts Florida gas prices will keep increasing

Blame it on the unprecedented ice and snow in Texas and its tragic aftermath. That s what AAA says higher gas prices that it predicts will continue to rise due to the recent winter weather blast s impact on the Gulf Coast refinery region. Power outages knocked out gasoline refineries in Texas and neighboring states as weather interfered with fuel shipments out of the area, AAA said. Since much of Florida s gasoline comes from refineries in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, an interruption in the supply line there has a direct impact on prices here. Florida is not alone, since that Gulf Coast area is a major source of gasoline in the United States, accounting for about 45 percent of total petroleum refining capacity. At the pump, Florida gas prices jumped 15 cents last weekend, for an average price of $2.61 per gallon. That s the highest daily gas price average since July 2019.

Jacksonville roads get widening or bridge repair as gas prices rise

New road construction is coming to multiple parts of Jacksonville, and with it some detours. Meanwhile, AAA has bad news about gas prices, as its latest survey says COVID-19 has soured many Floridians about traveling.  First, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority conducted a virtual groundbreaking this week for its latest JTAMobilityWorks project on a Northside road. Alta Drive between Interstate 295 and Burkit Lane will be rebuilt as part of a $38.4 million project. The existing roadway from north of I-295 to Faye Road will be rebuilt into a six-lane, divided roadway. From there to Ashgrove Road, it will be rebuilt into a four-lane divided urban section, then a five-lane section to Burkit Lane.
