Chattanoogan: Signal Mountain High’s Siena Rodrigues Excited About Being School’s First Morehead-Cain Scholar To UNC Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - by John Shearer Siena Rodrigues Siena Rodrigues When graduating Signal Mountain High School senior Siena Rodrigues was at the school track one Friday in early March throwing the discus, she could be seen excitedly hugging one teammate and running up to several others.
It was not over where her discus had landed, but where she was getting ready to land as a future college student after receiving an update on her phone.
But she did set a school record in the process, not in her discus throw during practice as an observer from a distance might have thought, but by being the first student from the school to receive the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina. ....
Serving the community has always been an integral part of Aneesha Tucker’s life. The Carolina junior was raised to find ways to give back. “My mom was a part of this service organization where they do a lot of volunteering, so it’s been instilled in me since I was younger, and it’s something that I’ve always loved to do,” said Tucker, who uses nonbinary pronouns. Tucker brought those passions for service and social justice to Carolina and has been dedicated to serving local communities. Those exceptional contributions to the campus and community were recently recognized when Tucker was awarded the 2021 MLK UNC Student Scholarship, which is given annually to a Carolina junior who best exemplifies Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to society. ....
Retiring ACC commissioner John Swofford’s ties to North Carolina are extensive. As a student at UNC, he was a Morehead-Cain Scholar and became the starting quarterback for the Tar Heels and switched to defensive back his senior year in 1971. ....
