COLUMBIANA Council Saturday morning approved a contract for storm water work on West Salem Street.
At an emergency meeting, council approved the contract with Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Company for the $2.2 million project that will remove rainwater from collecting around Salem Street.
City Manager Lance Willard said the project will be a “full make over,” explaining West Salem Street will have “quite a construction season.”
The Schick residence from the 60 block of West Salem Street addressed council to raise concerns regarding sewage back up in their basement. Willard said the city will come and check the problem.
Willard did note the problem with sewage may need to be resolved with a plumber, advising that sanitary sewer is a closed system. Increased rain should not impact sewage lines directly and it may be a private line issue.

COLUMBIANA There will be fireworks in the city on July 4, but not at Firestone Park.
Heidi Dattilio, president of the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce, and Lana Wilt, chairwoman of the Fourth of July Committee, came before city council this week to announce plans to relocate the fireworks. Fireworks will be displayed on July 4, which is a Sunday, at Shaker Woods Village.
“We just wanted to give the plants some time before ten thousand people trampled through the park,” said Dattilio; referring to the construction throughout Firestone Park.
Plans to relocate fireworks only include this year.
Dattilio mentioned that moving the fireworks will also help if people are still required to social distance. People can stay by or inside their vehicles and enjoy July 4 festivities.

COLUMBIANA City council had several traffic issues to address Tuesday.
Councilman Richard McBane brought the traffic in town square to the attention of council, suggesting that it’s time to get the situation under control. McBane pointed to a lack of understanding how the square works, paying attention or adhering to the signs indicating the need to yield and give pedestrians the right of way.
Mayor Rick Noel agreed with McBane saying, “I think we’ve all witnessed it”
Suggestions made by council members included improved signage and increased surveillance.
Council members agreed that a properly designed square calms traffic. Another council member referred to the square as a “real nut house.”

Josh Menning, owner of Menning Films, said he has been in contact with actress/producer Karen Abercrombie for the new film.
Abercrombie is known for her role as “Miss Clara” on the popular 2015 drama War Room.
Menning said the new Christmas movie is currently in the pre-production stage, and that plans call for filming to be completed in Columbiana April 12-24.
