Berkley to mirror federal law, increase age to purchase tobacco products to 21

OAKLAND COUNTY In an update to comply with federal law, the city of Berkley is moving to restrict the purchasing of cigarettes and other tobacco products for people under the age of 21.
At its June 21 meeting, the Berkley City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that will raise the age of people eligible to purchase cigarettes, tobacco and nicotine products to 21. The previous age at which people could buy these products was 18.
The change is based on federal legislation that was signed at the end of 2019. City Manager Matt Baumgarten stated that the Berkley Public Safety Department had been working with City Attorney John Staran to bring the city into consistency with federal legislation. ....

Berkley resumes evaluation of Coolidge Highway restriping project

BERKLEY In 2019, the city of Berkley began a restriping and lane reduction project on Coolidge Highway.
The project reduced the number of lanes on the roadway from four to two and added a middle turn lane, bike lanes and additional on-street parking. The aim of the restriping was to improve traffic, bring more attention to the downtown and decrease accidents.
The original plan for Berkley was to conduct a 24-month research process to evaluate whether the road diet achieved its desired effect. After a year, the city was going to determine, from the data it collected, whether it would continue on for another year or revert the road back to its original design. ....

BERKLEY Berkley is in the midst of a lawsuit involving how the municipality went about scoring businesses that had applied to operate a marijuana establishment in the city.
The city is being sued by at least 10 different businesses in two cases in the Oakland County Circuit Court. In one case, the businesses involved are Yellow Tail Ventures LLC, Oak Flint LLC, Nature’s Remedy and 123 Ventures. The other lawsuit involves Fire Farm LLC, Pure Life I, Pure Life Berkley II, Berkley Herbal Center, Pure Roots and GS Ashley LLC. ....
